Little do many of us know of the CRUCIAL importance of Vitamin D!

If you could use better mood regulation, mobility, bone density, increased immune response, stamina, and even support for healthy blood pressure or hair loss (just to name a few), you seriously need more Vitamin D in your life!
Tragically, often when we find ourselves struggling with any of the above listed health challenges (or ANY troubling ailments, really!) and then opt to seek help via allopathic (conventional) medicine, we are typically prescribed synthetic pharmaceutical drugs designed to SUPPRESS the symptoms.
But let this sink in:
LACK OF SYMPTOMS ISN'T WELLNESS!

Allopathic medicine is designed to TREAT, not to CURE. Why? >>> Because a CURED patient is a LOST customer <<<
It's really that simple.
Then there's the OTHER—even more tragic—side of the coin, where we as patients are routinely misdiagnosed and given completely unnecessary meds that wreak havoc in our bodies (more on that in my important blog posting "Are You Nutrient-Deficient?").

Now, let's discuss Vitamin D deficiency & what can be done to resolve it SAFELY & NATURALLY
FIRST OFF, WHAT ALL CAN HAPPEN TO US WHEN WE ARE VITAMIN D DEFICIENT?

So how BEST to get that troublesome deficit under control?
SUNLIGHT, sister! (...or brother :-)
There's a reason it's called the "Sunshine Vitamin". Sunlight plays a very key role in our overall health and well-being, with more than 90% of our vitamin D potentially coming from sunlight exposure. The skin absorbs ultraviolet rays, which, via our liver & kidneys, triggers the conversion of cholesterol molecules in the skin into vitamin D3, the active form of vitamin D. Which, as you can see in the infographic above, is no small potatoes for your overall well-being if you're short on getting enough of it!
Okay... so simply go get some good old-fashioned sunshine in our lives. Easy enough to do: we just have to head on outside, especially on bright & sunny days, and we're all topped up—right..?
Well, unfortunately, it's not QUITE that cut and dry for many folks. Here's why:
There are a number of variables that can significantly affect vitamin D3 production via sunlight in our bodies...
Age: with the production of Vitamin D3 in our bodies reducing steadily with age, we need more & more of it but typically get less & less of it due to reduced mobility.
Skin pigmentation: those with darker skin have more melanin, so less UV light gets absorbed to create vitamin D3, needing more sun exposure to produce vitamin D3 than those with lighter skin.
Geographics/Time of the day/Season of the year: where & when we go out in the sun greatly affects how much sunlight we get & need. Not only does the angle of the sun in the sky affect UV intensity, especially the farther you get from the equator, but clothing in colder months covers a larger portion of our skin, greatly inhibiting ultraviolet light absorption.
>>>In the U.S. state of Missouri in summer, for example, 25% of the body (the hands, face, neck & arms) is exposed to the sun, and in these seasons, about 10 minutes of sun exposure at noon produces sufficient vitamin D for the day. In the winter, only 10% of the body is exposed, and nearly 2 hours of sun exposure at noon is needed daily to produce a sufficient amount of vitamin D. Big difference!
And lastly...
Sunscreen & sunglasses: can effectively block our cell's access to vital sunlight (and yes, we also receive those beneficial UV rays effectively through our eyes!). Sunscreen, depending on the SPF, can be particularly counter-productive to facilitating the production of vital Vitamin D3 (not to mention that the vast majority of commercial sunscreens are chemically-laden and therefore, ironically, cancer-causing! Thanks to Young Living for developing a plant-based, completely toxin-free sunscreen for those times when in prolonged sun exposure :-).
Next best thing if sufficient sunlight exposure isn't possible? Supplementation!
Now, we can (and should) certainly reach for vitamin D-rich foods like fatty fish, eggs, some mushrooms, and grass-fed unpasteurized dairy, but high quality supplements also have a solid purpose in filling in those blanks when we are unable to be consistent. And let's be honest; life happens, and that's just the way things roll sometimes.

All work and NO play makes Lea a dull gal! Well... not really. I think I'm pretty sharp most days, ha ha! But I DO need to unplug and cut loose with some much-needed play time once in a while. So this year for spring break, our youngest son Brad (last of our 8 left at home!) asked to go somewhere fun & adventurous.
